Elastic wetting: Substrate-supported droplets confined by soft elastic membranes

چکیده

While classical wetting is well captured by the famous Young's equation and bulge blister models are readily available, there limited understanding of a micro- or nano-scale droplet being covered an ultrasoft elastic membrane. We call this phenomenon to feature interplay between liquid's surface tension membrane's deformation. Examples include cell blebs 2D material bubbles, where membrane thickness ranges from microns sub-nanometers. In work, we study equilibrium solve for profiles pressure-volume relations membrane-confined droplets. show that in wetting, pressure across membrane/droplet interface can be described simple superposition Young-Laplace nonlinear equation. Furthermore, elasticity, geometric nonlinearity, tension, together with membrane-substrate adhesion, interweave at contact line, leading rich configurations. Finally, examine effect substrate compliance on find rigid assumption approximates most existing experiments literature. Our results provide fundamental mechanistic insights into various phenomena as viable means extract physical parameters including bubble energies.

Elastic configurations of self-supported oxide membranes for fuel cells

Ultra-thin oxide films are of interest in energy conversion technologies such as low temperature solid oxide fuel cells and permeation membranes. Understanding their thermo-mechanical stability is an important problem. Edge clamped, self-supported thin film membranes show hierarchical wrinkles; with the largest wavelengths in the center, while smaller ones arise near the clamped boundary; corre...

Elastic membranes in confinement.

An elastic membrane stretched between two walls takes a shape defined by its length and the volume of fluid it encloses. Many biological structures, such as cells, mitochondria and coiled DNA, have fine internal structure in which a membrane (or elastic member) is geometrically 'confined' by another object. Here, the two-dimensional shape of an elastic membrane in a 'confining' box is studied b...

Fluid transport by active elastic membranes.

A flexible membrane deforming its shape in time can self-propel in a viscous fluid. Alternatively, if the membrane is anchored, its deformation will lead to fluid transport. Past work in this area focused on situations where the deformation kinematics of the membrane were prescribed. Here we consider models where the deformation of the membrane is not prescribed, but instead the membrane is int...

Wetting of elastic solids on nanopillars.

Solids and liquids are both known to exhibit Cassie-Baxter states, where a drop or a solid nanoparticle is maintained on top of pillars due to wetting forces. We point out that due to elastic strain, solid nanocrystals exhibit a behavior different from that of liquids. First, the equilibrium Cassie-Baxter state on a single pillar exhibits a spontaneous symmetry breaking due to elastic effects. ...

Impact dynamics for elastic membranes.

We study the dynamic response of stretched thin polymeric films following an impact by a rigid sphere. We vary the sphere radius, the impact velocity, and the film tension, and measure the contact time and the maximum deflection of the film during the impact. The response is sensitive to nonlinearities associated with the additional tension provided by the deformation. A physical model at the s...
